Useful research has been published in the British Medical Journal titled:
Home versus outpatient ultraviolet B phototherapy for mild to severe psoriasis
Objective: To determine whether ultraviolet B phototherapy at home is equally safe and equally effective as ultraviolet B phototherapy in an outpatient setting for patients with psoriasis.
Conclusion: "Ultraviolet B phototherapy administered at home is equally safe and equally effective, both clinically and for quality of life, as ultraviolet B phototherapy administered in an outpatient setting. Furthermore, ultraviolet B phototherapy at home resulted in a lower burden of treatment and led to greater patients’ satisfaction."

Very well made, comes in a sturdy case. Plenty of accessories including safety glasses, comb attachment which can be used all the time as it makes sure the light is kept at the optimum distance from the skin. There was a stopwatch timer included as well as very clear instructions on how long each session should last.
The improvement has been very good. It was being used to treat pustular psoriasis and found within a two weeks there were signifigant patches that did clear up.
Overall it was well worth trying as it helped when all the creams and lotions were all hit and miss. Some of them aggravating the problem.
As has been said before, be careful that you do not overdo the treatments. It is easy to do and we found out for us that spacing them out every other day worked best and if it looked a bit red or sensitive then we would leave it for a day then resume at the same treatment time as the one before. We would only increase the duration when it didn't look like it was burning or sensitive.
seems to be helping my grandsons condition
*Initial Review after 4 weeks usage and then update at 8 and 12 weeks:
1. Initial Review
Firstly, as most sufferers know, psoriasis does not have a 'one size fits all' treatment regime. I've suffered mild to moderate psoriasis (and some eczema) on arms, legs and trunk for 18 years. I tried most everything to cure it, and I know that in my case, some things worsen it (certain soaps, certain fabrics, extreme cold), and some things improve it a little (high dose paracetamol, topical steroid, dermatological moisturisers, sunshine), but absolutely nothing prevents it from flaring up 'unannounced'. My treatment of choice for all these years - prescribed by my dermatologist - has been a strong topical steroid applied at the first sign, but over the years - as a well known side-effect - the steroid has definitely had an adverse impact on my skin. For no apparent reason, 6 months ago I suffered the worst outbreak I've had in 10 years and so I decided I was overdue to try something new and as I'm very hesitant to try these immune-suppressor drugs, I thought I would try a UV-lamp and this Dermfix product seemed to be available at a reasonable price-point - especially as I realized it may not work for me.
After 4 weeks I see a roughly 40% improvement, but its too early to say whether the lamp is a minor or major contributor to this, or whether its merely the end of a cyclical flare-up - only time will tell and I will post an update in a another month. But I will say, that my gut feel after this initial period is that it is having a positive impact.
Some points on the product itself:
* The bulb was lose when the unit it arrived and initially I assumed it was broken. Removing the fitted plate (one screw) and a little push snapped the bulb into position.
* Read the manual - of course I rushed in without proper review and managed to burn myself the first time. As I'm a fair skinned northern European each 'application' initially can only last 30 to 40 seconds and areas of skin that don't normally see the 'light of day' even less...
* You have to be patient because the light beam only covers maybe 10 sq inches, so you need to work your way over patches carefully. I have been setting aside 45 minutes a day.
* One product 'defect' in my mind is that that the heavy plug adapter cannot be detached from the light-wand, meaning its a bit of a pain to store - but if it turns out to work, then no problem.
* Make sure you wear the glasses that they supply.
* The timer that they supply isn't much good so you might want to invest in a better 'count-down' timer
I want to emphasize that in this trial period, I am still using the steroid cream on any fresh outbreaks - but have experimented with just one cream application followed by the light therapy. After the first two weeks, fresh outbreaks in treated areas are down by about half.
So to summarize, my initial reaction is positive - but I am using this as another 'tool in the toolbox' - at this point its unrealistic to give up with other treatments and regimes, unless you are advised to do so by your dermatologist. For the record, I confirm I have no connection to the manufacturer of this lamp, or any other healthcare product.
2. Update after around 8 weeks of use - 5 days a week (2 break days):
I appear to be getting good use from this product; plaques have reduced by around 80% overall - although its not possible to say that the lamp is the direct cause of this remission, it does *feel* likely; I notice darker skin patches where the plaques were and I assume this is a slight tanning effect. Equally positive, I haven't had to use much topical steroid cream for several weeks and this is a big bonus after so many years.
On the downside, I took the unit with me overseas on a long-haul flight and one thing that was a disappointment relates to its apparent fragility. On arriving at my destination in Asia, I found that the reflector had separated from the back of the unit. Close inspection showed that it was just mounted on 6 spikes with daubs of sealant. A bit of DIY with super-glue fixed it, but nevertheless it was a little discouraging. Of course if the unit works in the longer term, I'd still pay the going rate for a replacement - currently about what I spend on Coffee each month. So if you intend to travel with it either take it in hand-luggage or wrap it well.
3. Update after 12 weeks
Plaques remain substantially reduced - perhaps at 5% to 10% of prior level and previously impacted skin is in much better condition, probably due to almost no application of steroid cream. I have continued to use the lamp every other day at just 30 seconds per treated area. I see this as a preventative measure, most areas remain free of any recurrence of psoriasis. Its impossible to attribute this drastic improvement solely to this lamp, because that would be unscientific. However, given that nothing else has changed, the balance of probability is that the lamp is having a positive impact so far, and so I think the only conclusion is that its worth a try; while I'm sure different people will see different levels of results, it seems like a small investment to take a chance on.
Great product for isolated outbreaks which is easy to use and works for me. All itchiness has gone within a short time.
I bought this from the manufactures website for my teenage daughter whose really unsightly Psoriasis was widespread over back of neck, back, backs of legs, stomach and even scalp!
It was quite miraculous how rapid the results are!
After just two or three applications this was visibly paler and flatter.
Now the leg patches are just pale flat normal skin.
Highly recommended but may take a bit longer to respond on thicker patches such as knees or elbows.
Money well spent!
Having had psoriasis for 20years on elbows kness and scalp and having tested everything on the market I wasn't sure whether or not to purchase this product butI am so glad I did. After using this for 3wks 5 times a week started at 1min per area now upto 3mins per area I have notice a big difference my psoriasis seems to be going no itching anymore and for the first time in many years I am using a normal shampoo. This is the first time I have wrote a review on any product but I am so impressed and noing how bad psoriasis affects peoples life I wanted to share my experience with this product.
I suffer from really bad seborrheic dermatitis and despite being hesitent to buy such an expensive item as i was uncertain if it would work or not, my condition was getting really bad and i was getting desperate. I have only been using it for only a month now but so far the results are pretty good. my condition has almost completely cleared up. I did manage to give myself a spot of sunburn at first but that was an isolated inccident. I have yet to see the long term effects but overall if used correctly and if you actually read the instructions first, this unit is well worth the price. I only wish i had bought one years ago.
I love it. My psoriasis clears up in the sun and if I keep on top of it with this lamp (3x a week) it totally does the trick. So happy with it!
My psoriasis has always responded very well to sunlight & I have, in the past, had a number of series of UV treatments at hospital - all worked well, but at my local hospital I was only allowed a certain number sessions, which helped to improve my skin, but never cleared it completely (when treated while living abroad, my treatment was not stopped until the skin looked and felt normal again & this lasted for a very long time until an allergy caused it to flare up again).
Knowing this and feeling quite depressed at the thought of having to bare my ugly skin in public while on holiday (or suffer overdressed in the heat), I decided to invest in this hand held lamp. Yes, it can be quite time consuming using it if you have large patches to cover and yes, you have to really give it time, weeks in fact, before you reap the benefits, but for me it has been a very worthwhile investment.
I used the lamp on two very large, stubborn patches on my outer calves, which had been there for a number of years, despite my having been on a string of medication including Methotrexate, Leflunomide & biologics therapy. The first few times I used the lamp, my skin continued to be inflamed & itchy, but within a week had begun to be less inflamed. Gradually over a period of about 4-6 weeks the patches began to become less flakey & less itchy and appeared far less raised than before. By the time I went on holiday I felt confident enough to wear dresses & shorts in public & with the overall tan I had from the lovely sunny weather in the UK before we went, you could hardly see the patches at all.
Now, 3 months from starting using the lamp, I have reduced the use to only once or twice a week & have reduced the time too. The patches are more or less gone (I can still see them faintly & can feel a slight difference in the skin too), but I am very happy.
I am well aware of the risks involved in using UV light & my Drs will probably not be particularly happy about it, however, for me personally, this has given me a better quality of life & heaps more confidence, so the benefits outweigh the risks. In fact I wish I had bought one years ago - then i could have enjoyed wearing more dresses, skirts & shorts rather than always covering up with trousers!
I bought this quietly hopeful that there is something 'in' the positive reviews of this product-and after 20 uses i haven't been let down. I do well from exposing my skin to sun-so every year i go to india and roll around on the beach for 6 weeks and my psoriasis starts clearing after a month- on my return after a few months the patches come back. This product is proving to be much more effective than the sun in terms of the amount of time it takes to clear. I have emerging patches that have started to reapear after my last trip to thailand- with the dermafix it need only 30 seconds to beat them back -the stubborn patches are improving vastly too. Its changed my whole outlook on life- really!
I have bought this lamp for my vitiligo and its been one month when I started treatment. I can see return of pigmentation on white patches but Im using it together with Vitix gel. im happy witch the purchase so far.
I was a little skeptical when researching this lamp as to weather it would actually make any difference to my psoriasis,i have gutate psoriasis and some small patches of standard psoriasis.I went straight in at 1 min per patch, then my next 2 treatments i upped it by 30 seconds each.So 2 minutes per area by the third day.My patches has much less flakiness, the redness has gone to a pinky colour and itchiness has virtually gone! The skin around the psoriasis is a little brown but that settles back to normal anyway,it is just a tanning effect i suppose. My belly button was full of P and itched constantly as it is a deep type belly button and this lamp has been like a miracle for me,the relief is amazing.I will never sell this lamp even when clear as i always want the security of knowing i can get rid of any P that shows up.I am going to up my time to 4 mins in 30 second increments,it is time consuming but i use the timer provided and just watch tv at the same time so it is no problem.
Was treating psoriasis on torso with Dovobet prescribed by doctor but not safe to use ointment on face so purchased the subject UV lamp. Amazed and delighted to discover it works much faster and better than prescribed ointment. I am Engineering Designer (long retired) and have nothing but praise for the quality and design of this instrument. If you have psoriasis I recommend this product.
I bought this for my scalp psoriasis and vitamin d deficiency.
I have been using it for 4 weeks now and I can see a small improvement.
It has lost a couple of teeth on the comb already but is fairly robust.
Superb Quality very well made and very easy to use and does the job very well indeed.
My Excema, which I've had for 2 years, has now (miraculously) 99% cleared up and I now just give myself a "maintenance"does
each day. I would certainly recommend this item for anyone!
Has lived up to expectations. After just over 3 weeks use - 2 days on, one day off - starting at 1 minute and increasing by 15 seconds each time, have noticed a remarkable improvement. Not sure if it will totally clear stubborn patches of psoriasis but very pleased with results so far. Can be time consuming because of the small areas treated but worth the effort. Also very important to apply a good moisturising cream on treated areas several times a day.
Thought I would come back and write a second review on this item. ABsolutely delighted with this product. After only five days the skin on my elbows has completely cleared with the patches on my hands and knees following closely behind. I had tried everything before I discovered this product with no avail. If you are considering buying this product to clear your psoriasis do it NOW I would have paid double the price for it. So happy
this can be used to treat some skin conditions, it is cheaper on the sellers site but i still chose amazon, why share my details and amazon is a company i would support. the dermfix came with goggles and comb attachment for scalp psoriasis. I bought this as a present for a suffer, they have gotten somewhat better.
I have suffered with psoriasis for several years and had all the treatments going.
I spoke with Androv Medical team about the psoriasis lamp to get further details and was very impressed with the teams knowledge and detail provided.
I therefore purchased this item and the results have been amazing. It helps to prevent and keep psoriasis under control and all from the comfort of your own home. I don't normally write reviews but I was so impressed with this product that I wanted to share my feedback.
I would highly recommend this item its fantastic.
I have been using the Dermfix 1000MX lamp for a couple of months now and I am very pleased with the results. First impressions when I received the lamp was that the whole package is well designed and contains all you need, the lamp comes in a good quality carrying case and includes the lamp, instructions, a timer, protective glasses, comb attachment and protective cover. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow, I have found that using the comb attachment is a simple way of ensuring that the lamp is the correct distance from the skin. I followed the instructions and started off with 1 minute treatments and have gradually extended the time to 2 minutes. By sticking to the recommended times I have not suffered with any burning or redness.
After 2 weeks of use I could see a big improvement in my Psoriasis, flaky skin was reduced as was the redness. After 5 weeks some areas have completely healed allowing me to use the lamp less frequently. I have had patches of Psoriasis for 30 years and prior to using the lamp I had been concerned about the regular use of creams, at certain periods I had been using steroid creams on a daily basis, the regular use of steroid creams is not advisable. Since using the lamp I have not needed to use any creams.
I would certainly recommend this product.
I have been using this product for psoriasis for a couple of months in combination with Dovobet. I had high expectations after some reviews and to be honest the light didn't have the immediate results I had (perhaps naively) expected. However, after a couple of months regular use my scab/plaque is nearly completely gone and the level of itching is nothing compared to what it was. I still have a red mark on my skin but I had a large area on the back of my right lower calf which has shown very significant improvement. Do not regret the purchase of this lamp for one second and would encourage others to try it.
Having suffered with ugly psoriasis scars for years this lamp cleared them in 2 weeks - absolutely amazing and worth every penny.
I've been suffering on and off with eczma for years now and have always used a precription cream which, I'd had to slap on for days/ weeks, sometimes wearing cotton gloves and wrapping my legs in cling film of a night time in order to enhance the efficacy of the cream. The mind bending itching would stop for a while but eventually it would recur taking me back to square one. No matter how early I 'caught' an episode, it seemed to have to fully 'bloom' no matter how soon I got the cream on it. This is not news for anyone who is prone to eczma attacks. However, I had noticed that when I spent some time in the sun, any eczma areas exposed to it always improved. No chance of too much sun in the UK so autmn and winter months could be miserable. Then I saw on line the Dermfix 1000MX UV-B Lamp which in my mind says 'sun lamp', kind of. The reviews seemed to make more of the psoriasis benefits but, when you are desperate (and I was desperate), I thought I'd give it a chance as it seemed to line up with my sunny day experiences. I had seen it advertised cheaper on one or two sites elsewhere but they did not include the safety googles in the price (and you DO need the safety goggles). It arrived very well packaged and on time. After two days use (ie days one and three) the itching had begun to subside and by the end of six days use the eczma blooms had paled. The timer they included also keeps you on the safe side and I would strongly recommend it's use. So all in all it does what it says on the tin and I would have paid the price over again to alleviate the itching, but if you suffer from eczma you'll know that any way. Thank you Dermfix.
It is fantastic. I can not believe how well it works.Slowly build the time up.It has removed psoriasis that has been stubborn for at least 10 years. If I had know how good this product was I would have bought one sooner. It is better than the sun bed at removing stubborn psoriasis I am very happy with the amount I paid and feel that it was worth every penny.
Thank you x
I purchased one of these after coming back several times to look at them and not wanting to waste money on another gadget that didn't work.
I noticed a significant improvement on a patch on my leg due to the sun after spending some time in shorts last summer, and this pushed me into buying one. I have used the lamp for about 6 weeks now and another patch I had at the bottom of my back has virtually disappeared due to treatment with the lamp.
The one down side is the lamp can only do one area at a time (approx 10 cm) and the treatment is for approx 4 mins, so if your psoriasis is servere it could take some time to treat, Anyway, it worked for me.....
I was recently bought this as a gift from my parents. I(Used to!) have small, acute areas of plaque Psoriasis on my knees, Elbows and knuckles. The sun has always worked wonders for my Eczema, so I though I'd give it a go.
I'd recently finished a course of topical cream and the Psoriasis soon started to kick again. The lamp arrived well packed and in good time. It comes in a sturdy travel case and includes a comb (for scalp conditions), a timer and some UV glasses.
Instructions were included, but only had information about safety and maintenance. There were no guidelines on how to actually use the lamp - only a message advising to use under the guidence from your dermatolgoist.I imagine this is simpley there to cover the producer legally. After a few internet searches looking for other peoples experiences on usage, I determined that 2 mins of use evry other day was the norm. I've been using this method for the last 2 weeks and haven't seen the Psoriasis since! I always use the timer and am careful not to over do it - I've no doubt you could get burnt with over use (+ the obvious risks with overexposure to UV Rays!). Always moisturise the areas after use.
As other users have said, this product is really only suited to small areas of skin - For me its perfect. Highly recomended.
The lamp is approx 20 long, feels well built and comes with a useful cord around 3m long. The double UVB buld is protected by a comb adaptor which also serves to prevent the lamp being in too close contact with the skin. The lamp and mains adaptor come supplied in a tough plastic carry case which is very useful for protecting the lamp if you travel a lot, as I do. Also supplied are a pair of good quality protective wrap around goggles.
I suffer from affected areas mainly on the outer calves, a small area on each elbow and 5 very small patches on my scalp. I have tried various topical solutions, creams, wash gels/soaps and also acupuncture all with very minor benefits.
After using the lamp (as per the instructions) for just two weeks now, the results are amazing. The rough & flaky skin on my elbows has virtually disappeared, although the underlying skin is still somewhat darker than normal. The affected areas on my claves are also responding very well, with far less flakiness and are quite smooth after applying a good cream after the light treatment.
I am using the lamp according to the instructions, each affected area between 2-3 minutes and treating two days running and then missing the third.
Be careful not to exceed the recommended exposure - although this is only a small lamp, the exposure is very strong and sensitive areas can burn easily.
Highly recommended product!
